Super Message

A Note from Bob Thibault, Superintendent

January is National School Board Month, although VSBA celebrates board members in February. Here at WCSU, we feel that honoring those who serve on school boards in our communities deserve both months of recognition!

It's relatively easy to criticize our schools especially in our current political climate - it seems that actually contributing in some way to help solve problems is much harder. Our school board members give up hours and hours of their personal and family time to commit to supporting our students, staff and administration through policy work, budget development and advocacy at the state level. And they do this for very little compensation.

So take a moment and thank a board member from your district - or maybe consider running for school board if/when there's an opening in your town! School Board Members - our local rock stars!

WCSU News

Marlboro Elementary School
The news is hard to miss these days - but small schools are closing around Vermont, and each story is as unique as the school itself. In Marlboro's case, the town is facing dramatic enrollment drops, and projections for the future aren't much rosier. Combine that with a state-wide funding formula which is built on a per student cost, with tax penalty implications for districts that exceed a state set threshold, and it's easy to see why Marlboro is wrestling with this momentous decision. Their story isn't all that unique, but what is unique is the way in which the school board (and the town itself) has these conversations in their public community meetings.

Marlboro is a town that values community transparency, civil social discourse, and kindness. With a topic as tough as a school closing, one might think that raised voices and challenging arguments would be the norm. But not at a Marlboro Community Meeting - not a raised voice has been heard. The residents have conducted themselves with grace and dignity as they grapple with what to do next. Sometimes the best story isn't about what we do, but how we do it.

Board Business

Budget Season

Marlboro - The board has been working with two budget drafts - one for an operating school (grades 2-8) and one for a non-operational district. The decision will be made in March at their town meeting.
River Valleys - This district has the latest budget vote (late April) and so is still in the very early phases of budgeting.
Stratton - Stratton will most likely be adopting their budget early in January, with an eye on voting at town meeting.
West River - The WR budget committee has met several times and will meet once more before their January meeting. Their budget vote will be in early April this year.
Windham - They have already adopted a budget which will go to vote at town meeting in early March.

Curriculum Corner

A Note from Renee Merluzzi, Director of Curriculum

This month many of our elementary classrooms are presenting and celebrating their end of unit EL performance tasks. In several of our schools, parents, community, and school staff have been invited to see their children present the culmination of their Module 1 learning. It has been remarkable to see how students have risen to the challenge of the very daunting task of public speaking! Starting in Kindergarten, they start learning and practicing these skills and I look forward to seeing these students perfect these skills as they continue these performance tasks throughout the years. A big shout out to TES 1st grade teacher Honour Solari, NB 5th grade teacher Joyce VanPamelen, and Dover 4th grade teacher Carla Aquadro, for opening their doors to the whole community for their performance tasks, sharing their students work with us, and making it a true celebration of learning!

Featured below: 5th grade at Newbrook school. Students presented their monologues from Esperanza Rising, shared their avocado brownies made in Farm to School, and displayed their yarn dolls and fruits and veggies prints made in art class, which connected to the Mexican culture within the novel. Way to go Amy Duffy and Suzanne Paugh for integrating these connections to the novel within your unified arts curriculum!

Staff Highlight

Dana Gordon-Macey, Marlboro Principal

In a time rife with conflict, the world needs leaders who can remain positive, impact positive change, and be true to the principle of putting the kids first. Dana Gordon-Macey is living that this school year, as the town of Marlboro wrestles with the impossible question of closing its school. Heart wrenching discussions seem to be the norm, both in the community and the staff room, but the students and staff (and community!) are so incredibly lucky to have Principal Gordon-Macey in place to calm the chaos and keep the focus on kids. Her approach reminds us of the Maya Angelou quote: "I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it." On behalf of WCSU, thank you, Dana.

Central Office Corner

Nicole Ray, Executive Assistant to the Superintendent

Hi everyone! The past year has been quite the whirlwind for me, but what a wonderful ride to be on! As some of you may know, I started the 24-25 school year at Jamaica Village School as their Administrative Assistant. Last February, I accepted the AA position at Townshend Elementary. By September of this school year, I was being considered for my current position at the Central Office. It has been a crash course in all things WCSU, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. All of this experience has given me such valuable insight to what is happening within our schools, and (I believe) has set me up to be a wonderful resource and advocate for all the folks working on the ground floor.

I was highlighted this month as I have a close relationship with our school boards. It is my responsibility to manage the school board meeting calendar, so I am in constant communication with board members. I warn and post all meetings, minutes, and organize board documents for public view on our website.

If you have not ever been on our website to check out our school board meeting agendas and related documents, I recommend doing so! It is a great way to stay in the know, and be part of the decision making process for important issues within your child's school district.
