Super Message

Bob Thibault, Superintendent

A Note from Bob Thibault, Superintendent

As we welcome April, I want to reaffirm our district’s deep commitment to the safety and well-being of every student. National Child Abuse Prevention Month reminds us that every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and free from harm. In our schools, we know that when children feel secure, they are better able to learn, grow, and thrive. Our teachers and staff are the heart of this effort; they serve as trusted mentors who build the meaningful connections necessary to ensure every child feels seen and heard. Prevention is more than a policy—it is a shared responsibility rooted in care, awareness, and compassion. By working together to foster a culture of support and trust, we can help ensure that every child feels protected, valued, and cared for.

Parent Resource

Parenting can be challenging, and support is available for families in our community. If you are feeling overwhelmed or looking for guidance, the following resources provide confidential help and connections to services.

Additional helpful parenting information and resources can also be found through the Prevent Child Abuse Vermont Parent Resource Directory, which provides guidance on child development and family supports for children from birth through adolescence.

Curriculum Corner

A Note from Renee Merluzzi, Director of Curriculum

This past month schools celebrated National Reading Month and are wrapping up several initiatives that supported the importance of literacy. I’d like to highlight the Kindergarten class at Newbrook Elementary for opening their doors to “Mystery Readers” this month. Mrs. Bostrom organized a mystery reader for her students several times throughout the month. The students did not know who would be walking in the door or what book they were bringing! It was a joyful experience for me and kudos to her students for being such an engaged and respectful audience. Central office staff are very appreciative of Mrs. Bostrom and her open invitation to read to her class which in turn gives the central office people face time with kids and teachers creating a culture of “we are in this together”.

At the end of March and into April students in 3rd-11th grade are taking the state standardized testing, VTCAP. VTCAP is a standards based assessment given yearly to our students in the subjects of ELA, Math, and Science. Families and caregivers can help by ensuring your kids get plenty of rest the nights before testing occurs, eat a good breakfast, and relieve any testing anxiety by discussing the test with your child(ren) and giving the message we all have strengths and doing your best is all we ask.

Joni Bertram; Administrative Assistant to the Director of Student Servies

Joni has been with WCSU for 6 years as the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Student Services. One very important aspect of her role is as the McKinney Vento Liaison. She provides assistance to our most vulnerable students by providing what the student needs to stay successful in school. This could be clothing, backpack, school supplies, health or first aid kits, extracurricular program fees, etc. She also provides resources to the family and assists with making connections to those resources.

Joni lives in Townshend with her husband, Scott. Her 2 daughters, Holly & Heather both graduated from L&G and she now has 2 beautiful grandchildren.
